Project Objective
To make an invisible, in-body surgical mechanism instantly understandable to surgeons, OR staff, and hospital procurement, without sacrificing clinical accuracy.
Our Approach
We combined photoreal 3D product renders with a stylized clinical register for inside-the-body sequences, validated against device documentation at every stage before animation began.
Target Audience
Surgeons, operating room staff, and hospital procurement teams evaluating surgical technology.
Visualizing a Mechanism No Camera Can Reach
AirSeal's core value, stable pneumoperitoneum, continuous smoke evacuation, and valve-free access, happens inside the human body during live procedures. Medical animation wasn't a stylistic choice for ConMed; it was the only medium that could show the mechanism at all.

Invisibility Compounded by an Expert Audience
The physiological events that make AirSeal valuable are internal, dynamic, and invisible even to the surgeons who benefit from them, forcing every prior sales conversation to rely on imagination. Medical device content also faces a scrutiny level consumer work never sees: anatomy has to be correct, the mechanism has to match real engineering, and the tone has to stay educational enough for clinical settings while a single asset had to serve sales meetings, trade shows, and training alike.
Two Visual Registers Built on Validated Clinical Fidelity
Production began with a research and validation phase against device documentation and clinical reference, so every visualized behavior mapped to the system's real mechanics before storyboards went to review. The finished animation moves between two registers: photoreal 3D renders for the hardware, and a stylized clinical aesthetic, clean tissue tones, semi-transparent anatomy, legible particle airflow, for the inside-the-body sequences, keeping the video watchable without sacrificing credibility. Narration follows surgical logic: the clinical problem first, then the mechanism, then the outcome.

The Results
The animation gave ConMed's field teams a shared mental model that no brochure could offer, letting reps move straight into clinical and procurement specifics.
- 80% shorter early-stage sales cycles for the field team
- Used consistently across 5 trade events in the first year
- Reduced training and onboarding overhead for new OR staff
